"The EU proposal does not extend as far as their current reform would allow them. There is room on the market access side," the US trade official told reporters, speaking on condition of anonymity. "The tariffs cuts that would increase competition are not inconsistent with CAP reform."
Last week, the EU offered to nearly halve its average tariff on agricultural imports to just over 12 percent to help move forward farm trade talks ahead of a major World Trade Organisation meeting in December. That proposal was criticised by the United States and Brazil as not enough, and attacked by France as going too far.
